The name Wentworth seems obvious now, but when Qantas staff were invited to name the new hotel during construction, not one person suggested it. With the existing Wentworth Hotel still in business just a few blocks away, it would have been unimaginable to give the new property the same title.
Ultimately, the Qantas board made the decision to close the old Wentworth on the night before the new hotel opened, and the hotel was given the name Qantas Wentworth. The Wentworth tradition, in place for over 160 years, was thus preserved with only a few hours interruption.
With the new name came a stylish new logo using the clean and crisp fonts that were increasingly popular in the 1960s.
It signified that The Wentworth was a modern hotel for a modern era, and guests couldn’t wait to get inside.
